The Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science maintains mailing lists as a service to make it easier for faculty and staff to contact students about core Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science activities. These communications will include course and bursary related information and may also be used to communicate during an emergency.

What lists will I be on?
Students will be automatically enrolled in mail lists for classes and lab sections they are enrolled in as well as mail lists for general Engr+CSc undergraduate announcements.

How do I change the email address the mail is sent to?
The lists are automatically updated every morning from the preferred / primary email address defined in the UVic "My Page" system.
The helpdesk provides instructions on changing your preferred email address.
How can I filter mail from these lists?
Engr+CSc mail list messages will be sent from '@lists.uvic.ca'
The Engr+CSc mail list name will be enclosed in square brackets [] and are prefixed by 'Engn-' in the mail subject line.

Most mail clients and online mail services allow filtering based on the mail subject line and on the sender.
How do I unsubscribe from these lists?
You cannot unsubscribe from the mailing lists while you have an active relationship with the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.
Canada's anti-spam legislation (CASL) does not apply to messages that are solely related to the core activities of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science because these activities are not “commercial” in nature. It also does not apply to messages sent by the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science for the primary purpose of raising funds.
These lists are used to communicate with students about the core activities of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. These activities defined in section 47 of the University Act and are considered not “commercial” in nature.
- establish and maintain colleges, schools, institutes, faculties, departments, chairs and courses of instruction;
- provide instruction in all branches of knowledge;
- establish facilities for the pursuit of original research in all branches of knowledge;
- establish fellowships, scholarships, exhibitions, bursaries, prizes, rewards and pecuniary and other aids to facilitate or encourage proficiency in the subjects taught in the university and original research in all branches of knowledge;
- provide a program of continuing education in all academic and cultural fields throughout British Columbia; and
- generally, promote and carry on the work of a university in all its branches, through the cooperative effort of the board, senate and other constituent parts of the university.
When will I get off these lists?
- When the university indicates that your degree has been conferred (this usually occurs shortly before the convocation ceremonies).
- If you drop a course you will be removed from the course lists the following day.
- If you are a declared student in the faculty and haven’t enrolled in a course or workterm for at least one term.
What are the list usage guidelines?
- List usage must comply with the UVic policy IM7200, Acceptable use of electronic information resources.
- List usage must comply with the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science policy Use of the Engineering Computer Data Network Infrastructure.
- List usage must comply with the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science Standards for Professional Behaviour.
- Messages can be sent throught the lists from list member email addresses.
- Large lists (such as the engn-ugrad list) are moderated by the Deans Office to help prevent abuse.
- Lists will only accept messages addressed to a maximum of 10 recipients or lists to help prevent abuse.
- List messages > 500 KB in size including attachments are held for moderation to help prevent abuse.
- List messages are limited to 5 MB in size including attachments.
- List messages are spam and virus scanned.
- Moderated messages should be addressed within a few hours during normal business hours.
What do I do if I've recieved a message that is not appropriate?
Please submit details of the message you feel was inappropriate and mailing list to the Deans Office on the IT Support form.
